12 Angry Men (1957)

About This Movie

A lone dissenting juror gradually persuades eleven others to reconsider their hasty guilty verdict in a murder trial, and the entire film takes place in a single sweltering jury room. Sidney Lumet directed what amounts to a ninety minute argument, and it is more gripping than most action films. Every character represents a different human weakness, prejudice, or strength.

Why It's a Classic

Lumet proved that cinema does not need locations, special effects, or even much physical movement to create unbearable tension. Henry Fonda's Juror #8 never raises his voice, never grandstands, and never shames the others; he simply asks questions and waits for reason to do its work. The screenplay by Reginald Rose gives each of the twelve jurors a distinct personality and backstory that shapes their vote, from Lee J. Cobb's rageful father projecting his own failures onto the defendant to the advertising executive who just wants to get to a baseball game. Lumet's camera starts wide and gradually moves closer to the actors' faces as the room becomes hotter and the arguments more intense, a claustrophobic technique that makes the audience feel physically trapped. The film is a passionate argument for the justice system's noblest ideal: that one voice willing to stand alone can prevent a terrible wrong.

Fun Fact

The entire film was shot in just nineteen days on a single set. Lumet rehearsed the cast for two weeks before filming, treating the production like a stage play. Henry Fonda co-produced the film because no studio would finance it, believing a single room drama would be too boring for audiences. The actors wore no makeup, and Lumet asked them to wear progressively more rumpled clothing as the day wore on to convey the heat and exhaustion.

Parent Note

There is no violence, no language, and no sexual content. The dramatic tension is entirely verbal and psychological. The film deals with racial prejudice, as several jurors' biases against the defendant's ethnicity become apparent. The all male, predominantly white cast reflects 1957 jury composition, which can prompt useful discussions about representation. Accessible to virtually any age, though the courtroom drama format is most appreciated by teens and up.
