The Big Lebowski (1998)
About This Movie
Jeffrey 'The Dude' Lebowski, an unemployed bowler who mostly wants to replace his ruined rug, gets pulled into a kidnapping scheme involving a millionaire, nihilists, avant garde artists, and a briefcase full of dirty underwear. The Coen Brothers crafted a Raymond Chandler mystery where the detective is too stoned to follow his own case. Every rewatch reveals another joke you missed.
Why It's a Classic
Jeff Bridges created cinema's most beloved slacker, a character so perfectly relaxed that 'The Dude abides' became a life philosophy for millions. The Coens structured the film as a genuine noir mystery, complete with a narrator (Sam Elliott's cowboy), femmes fatales, and hired thugs, but filtered everything through a haze of White Russians and bowling alleys. John Goodman's Walter Sobchak, a Vietnam veteran who connects everything in life back to his service, is one of the great comic creations in American film. The dream sequences, including a Busby Berkeley inspired bowling fantasy, are among the most inventive set pieces the Coens ever devised. The film was a modest performer on release but became one of the most quoted and rewatched comedies in history through home video and midnight screenings.
Fun Fact
Jeff Bridges wore many of his own clothes for the role, including the Dude's signature jelly sandals and shorts. The Coen Brothers wrote the role of Walter Sobchak specifically for John Goodman. 'The Dude' is loosely based on Jeff Dowd, a film producer and political activist the Coens knew, who was indeed called 'the Dude' in real life. An annual Lebowski Fest has been held since 2002, where fans dress as characters and bowl together.
Parent Note
There is strong language throughout, drug use (marijuana primarily), brief nudity, and several scenes of comic violence including a severed toe. The plot involves kidnapping and extortion. The humor is sophisticated and absurdist, rewarding viewers who appreciate deadpan comedy and genre parody. Rated R for language and content.
