Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

About This Movie

T.E. Lawrence, a brilliant and eccentric British officer, unites feuding Arab tribes against the Ottoman Empire during World War I, and the desert itself becomes a character as vast and unforgiving as his ambition. David Lean filmed on location across Jordan, Morocco, and Spain, and the result is a visual experience that simply cannot be replicated on a small screen. This is one of those films that reminds you why cinema was invented.

Why It's a Classic

Lean's widescreen compositions remain the benchmark for epic filmmaking, using the emptiness of the desert to convey both the grandeur and the loneliness of Lawrence's mission. Peter O'Toole's performance in his first major film role is astonishing, capturing Lawrence's charisma, narcissism, and psychological fragmentation with equal conviction. The film refuses to simplify its protagonist: Lawrence is heroic and troubled, idealistic and possibly sadistic, and the screenplay trusts the audience to hold those contradictions together. The match cut from Lawrence blowing out a match to the sunrise over the desert is one of the most famous edits in cinema history, and it demonstrates Lean's ability to make a simple visual transition feel like a statement about destiny. Maurice Jarre's orchestral score gives the vast landscapes a sweeping emotional dimension.

Fun Fact

Peter O'Toole had never starred in a major film before being cast as Lawrence, and the studio wanted Marlon Brando instead. The production used thousands of real Bedouin extras and over 300 camels. O'Toole was thrown from his camel so many times during filming that he stuffed a sponge inside his saddle. The film runs nearly four hours, and Lean insisted on an intermission, which is preserved in most home video releases.

Parent Note

There is war violence throughout, including battle scenes, executions, and an implied scene of sexual assault. The film's portrayal of Arab characters reflects 1960s attitudes and can feel paternalistic. The nearly four hour runtime with intermission is a genuine commitment, but the pacing rewards patience. Best experienced on the largest screen available.
