The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

About This Movie

Three gunslingers with shifting allegiances race across the American Southwest during the Civil War, each hunting for a fortune in buried Confederate gold. Sergio Leone stretches time itself, holding close-ups and silence until the tension becomes almost unbearable. The final three way standoff in a circular cemetery is one of the most imitated sequences in cinema history.

Why It's a Classic

Leone perfected the spaghetti western with this film, using extreme close-ups, vast widescreen landscapes, and Ennio Morricone's legendary score to transform a simple treasure hunt into something operatic. Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name barely speaks, yet his squint and cigar communicate more than pages of dialogue. The film's pacing is deliberately slow by modern standards, but Leone understood that tension comes from anticipation, not speed. The Civil War sequences give the film unexpected depth, showing the futility and waste of combat with genuine anger. Morricone's main theme, with its wailing vocals and twanging guitar, became the defining sound of the Western genre and remains one of the most recognized pieces of film music ever composed.

Fun Fact

Eli Wallach (Tuco) nearly died multiple times during filming. He accidentally drank from a bottle of acid left near the set, was nearly decapitated by the steps of a moving train, and was dragged across rough terrain by a horse. Clint Eastwood wore the same poncho without washing it throughout the production of all three Dollars films. The iconic cemetery scene was filmed at a set built by the Spanish army, who constructed over 5,000 graves for the production.

Parent Note

The violence is frequent but stylized, more theatrical than graphic by modern standards. There are hangings, shootings, and beatings, plus scenes of Civil War brutality. The nearly three hour runtime requires patience. The film's moral universe is amoral; all three protagonists are killers and thieves, which is part of the point but worth noting for viewers expecting clear heroes.
